Splitting the check, properly
The math is simple — (bill + tax + tip) ÷ people — but two details trip people up. First, tip convention: in the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for table service, 18–25% for larger groups (many restaurants add gratuity automatically for parties of six or more — check the receipt before tipping twice).
Second, pennies. $103.67 four ways is $25.9175 — not a real amount of money. Rounding everyone to $25.92 overshoots the bill by a cent. It sounds trivial until you're the one who always rounds up. How do you split a bill with tip?+
Add the tip to the bill first, then divide by the number of people. Tip is customarily calculated on the pre-tax bill amount: for an $86.40 bill at 20%, the tip is $17.28, making the total $103.68 — $25.92 each for four people.
Should tip be calculated before or after tax?+
The common convention in the US is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people simply tip on the total for simplicity (it works out slightly more generous). This calculator applies your tip percentage to the bill amount you enter and lets you add tax separately if it wasn't included.
What if the split doesn't come out to whole cents?+
Most calculators round and quietly lose or invent a few cents. This one distributes the leftover pennies: if $103.68 splits four ways evenly, everyone pays $25.92; if the total were $103.67, three people pay $25.92 and one pays $25.91 — and it always adds to exactly the total.
